I’ve been a judge for the Juno’s, Canadian Music Week, the Aboriginal Awards, the Havelock Country Music Festival and for FACTOR and more often than not it’s fairly obvious not just who has real talent and knows how to present it well but, in the case of handing out grant money, who is going to know how to use the opportunity wisely. Picking the most deserving broadcaster seemed more challenging. Of course I automatically want to pick anyone who fits my own criteria of best radio station – the one who most supports independent music, responds to emails and phonecalls and listens to everything we send them with open ears! But as  a judge on someone else’s behalf that means also taking into consideration someone else’s criteria which may or may not encompass things you hadn’t thought about.  I must say the CCMAs did a great job of making sure we thought about every aspect of what a station is, their impact in the community and in the Canadian music industry overall. It’s not always easy to be a juror, and hopefully we all did our best job in the end and fairly weighed not only who has supported most our own agenda over the years  but who is also most deserving by someone else’s standards. Just like any music director who has a favourite artist but still has to sit back and ask if that artist is a fit for their station and if they fit the mandate and sound they are presenting to their listeners. And if they do, that’s an ideal moment. But it’s never simple.
